When she felt that she had lost her clarity of vision in 1967, she ceased painting and left New York, returning to New Mexico in 1968. After a period of solitude and contemplation, she resumed painting in the early 1970s. Her images retained her subtle, geometric character, but her colors became even softer and more and more luminous, making visible the artist's sense of life's essence as a timeless, shadowy emanation. "When I cover the square with rectangles," she explained in 1967, "it lightens the weight of the square, destroys its power."
