He wants to be Velázquez so he paints stripes!

One day while the show, 'Three American Painters' was hanging at the Fogg Museum at Harvard, Michael Fried and I were standing in one of the galleries. To our right was a copper painting by Frank Stella, its surface burnished by the light which flooded the room. A Harvard student who had entered the gallery approached us. With his left arm raised and his finger pointing to the Stella, he confronted Michael Fried. 'What's so good about that?' he demanded. Fried looked back at him. 'Look', he said slowly, 'there are days when Stella goes to the Metropolitan Museum. And he sits for hours looking at the Velázquez, utterly knocked out by them and then he goes back to his studio. What he would like more than anything else is to paint like Velázquez. But what he knows is that that is an option that is not open to him. So he paints stripes.' Fried's voice had risen. 'He wants to be Velázquez so he paints stripes.'

The present lot is such a quintessential adoption of Ryman’s most enduring and recognizable tropes [...] that it qualifies as one of his most essential canvases of his late period. Indeed, what is so spectacular about Hour, 2001, is that it could have been painted during any era of Ryman’s career

I had the desire to make that central thing black and the rest of the painting was black. Well, I was in the state of terror because what would happen-I never had black on black.... The terror of it was intense. As a matter of fact, it took me, you might say, weeks to arrive at the point where I finally did it. I tried to do everything else except the black. I tried to make it, you know, I would leave it white. It looked all right; I thought maybe, you know, make it blue, make it.... But I couldn't, I had to make it black. That as I recall was a moment of high feeling for me which was almost obsessive as I could not leave it; I could not do it. I could not do it. I could not do it. I could do it. I felt, well, you know, black. I'll just ruin the canvas; it's good and expensive. And this is a long time ago; it was in 1949. And it was to a certain extent involved in the beginning of my new life, so to speak. Well, I finally ma...

That it would be "materializing the unimaginable" and "at the threshold of human perception" is what the creators say about "the first fully immersive, solid, human-scale, enclosed structure that is entirely 3D printed out of sand". As ground-breaking as it may be for 3D printing, as disappointing it is for architecture: Having visited today the Fridolinsmünster in Bad Säckingen, an - I would say random - baroque church, I can easily, without the slightest doubt attach the afore mentioned adjectives to this 300-years-old building which is - in contrast to the contemporary room - not only showing off craftsmanship, but also aesthetic judgement and equilibrium.

I for my part, will hold off getting overwhelmed until aesthetic keeps up with technology.

The true artists of our times undertake the heroic fight against mediocrity and mean values; in case of their defeat art in its most essential sense will die out. And when art dies, human spirit relapses into decline and the world goes back to barbarity. The crisis in art is the reflection of the spiritual crisis in our times, the times marked by the technological achievements of the so-called second Industrial Revolution; we can say that not only art but life itself is imperiled by the destructive forces of the human race; the ethical forces of the human race may turn out to be much weaker that the forces liberated by its genius of knowledge.

What’s in it for you? Uh, how about a rosé-dark sea of open-bar parties? Mad chicks, bro? The luxury of putting out a post-irony ironic mixtape of literally the worst music ever that’s met with a sea of responses like, “YES PLEASE”? And, at this point, it’s probably easier than becoming a menswear guru because, while there is an army of cads online and off to dissect why trad is the old plaid is the new rad, no one has any fucking idea what to do with, like, a blonde wigged-naked doll whose legs have been re-purposed into a nutcracker. That was actually a real thing. Also, art is hilarious. Like seriously, an artist is going to have The National perform the same song for six hours at PS1 in May. That's the kind of shit we’re dealing with here, people. My credentials, you ask? If presented with two objects, one of which being a painting, I can tell you which one is a painting. Think that doesn’t sound like enough? Then read o...

The rich, luxurious form ... graceful curves ... the beauty of its curvaceous form and the purity of its chromatic intensity ... the crisp precision and eloquence ... spectacular example of one of Donald Judd's most successful and elegant forms.
(Catalogue: Christie\'s Post-war and contemporary art evening auction, London, 13. February 2013)

Transformed into the idea of a progression, in which solid form and empty space alternate and interact according to a precise mathematical sequence, Judd transfers this simple spatial play into a majestic relief form.
(op. cit.)

Sometimes, I wish I had that a capacity for enthusiasm. Then again, I realize that a little bit of critical thinking isn't so wrong either.

When she felt that she had lost her clarity of vision in 1967, she ceased painting and left New York, returning to New Mexico in 1968. After a period of solitude and contemplation, she resumed painting in the early 1970s. Her images retained her subtle, geometric character, but her colors became even softer and more and more luminous, making visible the artist's sense of life's essence as a timeless, shadowy emanation. "When I cover the square with rectangles," she explained in 1967, "it lightens the weight of the square, destroys its power."

Erased Ballard Interview

related to art history | 0 comments

In 1996 the artist, writer and curator Jeremy Millar interviewed the novelist J G Ballard, began to duplicate the tape before he transcribed it, and accidentally erased hours of the great man's thoughts. The ruined cassette, one long pregnant pause, could only become an artwork: Erased Ballard Interview (1996-2001). You listen, heart in mouth, just as Millar must have done, hoping that Ballard's cultivated tones will, any second now, interrupt the hiss. And at the same time you hear everything in this piece: the whole history of the avant-garde affair with emptiness, the dematerialisation of the work of art, its evanescence into pure idea or gesture, up to and including Rauschenberg's erasure of de Kooning's drawing - all of it, suggests Millar's blank tape, is merely an absurd error.

It's been a long time since I postet here, so just some short thing for not staying inactive:

I saw this photo by Tomasz Wiech at the World Press Photo exhibition at Galerie Westlicht, it made the 3rd prize in Daily Life: singles. What catched my eye was the easiness and calmness that lies in it, surrounded by all those photos of war and catastrophes, of violence and injustice there's this employee in this kitchen, blue in blue, preparing himself his breakfast; and he seems almost a little... happy.

Actually, the photo is no single, but part of a series of "pictures about fragments of private life in the huge corporations", titled Something Private by Tomasz Wiech, to whom obviously also belong the rights on it.

Turning the Place Over - Richard Wilson, 2007 from Liverpool Biennial on Vimeo.

One of Wilson’s incredible temporary works, Turning the Place Over colonises Cross Keys House, Moorfields. It runs in daylight hours, triggered by a light sensor. (...) Turning the Place Over consists of an 8 metres diameter ovoid cut from the façade of a building in Liverpool city centre and made to oscillate in three dimensions. The revolving façade rests on a specially designed giant rotator, usually used in the shipping and nuclear industries, and acts as a huge opening and closing ‘window’, offering recurrent glimpses of the interior during its constant cycle during daylight hours.

It says fuck art, love artists, but that doesn't matter. What really matters is, that Juan Francisco Casas paints that with a ballpoint pen. Right. And as you no doubt have guessed: it's not the only one. check out more here.

...are the K Foundation. They actually did burn a million pounds. Why? - They don't even know themselves.

So why did I post it? It's not that I find it that cool to burn one million pound (although I find it cool), what caught my interest were the reactions of people, which were mostly some like

Why didn't they do something good with it?
(people)

As to say help people and so on, the charity thing as Jimmy Cauty calls is. Even more interesting, though, the response of Bill Drummond when it comes to people that starve and would have needed the money:

There's nothing less in the world other than a pile of paper. Us burning that money doesn't mean there's any less loaves of bread in the world or any less apples.

Jim Denevan

Jim Denevan makes freehand drawings in sand. At low tide on wide beaches Jim searches the shore for a wave tossed stick. After finding a good stick and composing himself in the near and far environment Jim draws-- laboring up to 7 hours and walking as many as 30 miles. The resulting sand drawing is made entirely freehand w/ no measuring aids whatsoever. From the ground, these drawn environments are experienced as places. Places to explore and be, and to see relation and distance. For a time these tangible specific places exist in the indeterminate environment of ocean shore. From high above the marks are seen as isolated phenomena, much like clouds, rivers or buildings. Soon after Jim's motions and marks are completed water moves over and through, leaving nothing.
